Will I loose weight doing Nia, and what are the benefits?

What can I expect from a Nia class?
Bags of fun, sweat and smiles. It is usual to feel apprehensive before trying something new, but it will feel so good you'll feel right at ease. There is no element of competition in Nia classes, and everyone is free to do their personal best and adapt the moves to suit. You're free to make mistakes and learn in your own natural time. All we ask is that you do your best.
The classes usually last an hour and blend dance moves with martial arts and yoga. All the moves are carefully choreographed to inspiring and different styles of music, and each class has a different focus. Nia is the leader in body-mind fitness and you can see this for yourself as Nia takes you through its movements, music and magic.
What do I need to bring, and what should I wear?
Bring a smile, some water and your class money. We dance barefoot (unless you need to wear support shoes for your feet) so don't worry about fancy trainers here. Wear clothes that you can move in, with full range of motion, you want to feel comfortable and cool. Most people tend to wear loose trousers and vest tops, but feel free to wear whatever makes your body feel like dancing! Skirts and flowing tops are definately allowed!
Most classes are ongoing, although some are run as courses. It's best to contact the teacher first and let them know you're coming, we always get excited to see new faces, and we can let you know what to expect in the class you intend joining.
I have no co-ordination and have never been to a dance / fitness class before, will I cope?
Nia is designed to be gentle on the body, and the moves are fairly simple and easy to follow, slowly building complexity and power as you get more accomplished. If you want to improve your co-ordination then this is the class for you. You will be encouraged to move and learn at your own speed. Nia teachers will encourage you to keep your fun and fascination levels up and frustration levels down. There will be plenty of time to master the technique, it's more important that you begin sensing the joy of movement and enjoy the class so you can come back and build a better relationship with your body, mind and spirit.
